FHU Athletics Shine in Fall 2024


Freed-Hardeman University athletes delivered an exciting and successful Fall 2024 semester, with accomplishments spanning multiple sports. From historic milestones to standout individual performances, FHU’s teams and athletes left their mark on the Mid-South Conference and beyond.

Men’s Soccer Makes History

The men’s soccer team celebrated its first winning season since 2014, finishing with 11 victories—the second-most in FHU history. Thabo Mahlaha was instrumental in the team’s success, tallying 21 career assists to claim the second-highest total in program history. His exceptional play earned him 2nd-Team All-Mid-South Conference honors, solidifying his place among FHU’s soccer greats.

Women’s Soccer Shows Growth

The women’s soccer team demonstrated improvement, increasing their win total from three last season to four this year. The team was anchored by Ellie Wood, who led the offensive charge with five goals, showcasing her talent and leadership on the field.

Volleyball’s Milestones

The volleyball team achieved key milestones this season under Head Coach Amanda Bretherick. They celebrated their first conference victory of the Bretherick era with a dominant home sweep of Cumberland, followed by a decisive straight-sets win over Georgetown. Individual accolades followed, with Alyssa Austin, Charley Fulton and Alanís Ruiz Rivera earning 2nd-Team All-Mid-South Conference honors for their stellar performances.

Cross Country Excellence

Both men’s and women’s cross country teams excelled under new leadership and rising talent. For the men, first-year head coach J Hall guided the team to a strong season, highlighted by a second-place finish out of 13 teams at the Warhawk Invitational. Daniel Puckett and Barrett Poe qualified for the NAIA National Championship race, while Drew Williams showcased his endurance in the NAIA Marathon.

The women’s cross country team had an equally remarkable season, finishing as runners-up in the 2024 Mid-South Conference Championship. Hannah Pearce earned a spot at the NAIA National Championship, and Zena Dorris represented FHU in the NAIA Marathon, continuing the program’s tradition of excellence.

Golf’s Competitive Season

The men’s golf team delivered a highlight performance at the Fall Shootout, carding a team score of 310 to secure fourth place. Brady Webb’s standout individual round of 69 (-3) tied for first place.

On the women’s side, FHU’s golfers captured the Fall 2024 edition of the FHU Invitational with a team score of 648. Reagan Malone turned heads with her impressive 73 (+1) during the first round of the Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational, setting the tone for a successful season.

Esports Makes Its Debut

FHU introduced its Esports program this fall, competing in Fortnite Trios, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Madden FHU 25, Valorant and Overwatch 2. The program’s first win came on September 24, when the Valorant team secured a commanding 2-0 (13-6, 13-6) victory, marking an exciting beginning for this new frontier in FHU athletics.

The Fall 2024 semester was a season to remember for FHU athletics, filled with breakthroughs, growth and unforgettable moments. As the Lions and Lady Lions transition into the winter and spring seasons, fans can look forward to even more achievements from these dedicated student-athletes who embody the spirit and determination of Freed-Hardeman University.
