FHU Honors Five Retiring Faculty and Staff Members
This spring, Freed-Hardeman University honored the retirements of Dr. Dana Baldwin, Lisa Beene, Dr. Mike Cravens, Dr. Paul Fader and Susan Kimpel, whose combined service represents more than 140 years of dedication to the university and its students.
Beene, who has served as chair of the Department of Behavioral Sciences for 29 years, and Cravens each completed 39 years of full-time faculty service at FHU. Since the retirement reception was held, the FHU community has mourned the passing of Dr. Cravens. Known for his commitment to students, his Christian faith and his love for the university, he leaves behind a legacy that continues to be reflected in the lives of countless alumni, colleagues and friends.
Baldwin began teaching as an adjunct in 2003 before joining the university full time in 2006. Fader is retiring after 33 years as a biology professor and was honored during this year’s spring commencement as Bearer of the University Mace and by ringing the ceremonial bell to close the academic year. Kimpel will retire July 31 as director of Academic Success and Records after joining the university in 2015.
Together, the five retirees helped shape generations of students through teaching, mentorship, academic leadership and student support services.
“My time at FHU has been an incredible journey full of incredible people and memories,” Beene said. “I have been blessed to experience FHU from multiple perspectives — as a child growing up in Henderson, as a student, as an alumna, as a faculty member and now soon as a retiree.”
Beene said the relationships built over decades of teaching are what she will miss most. “The people of FHU are etched in my heart,” she said. “I believe people and relationships are at the heart of Freed-Hardeman.”
Kimpel reflected on the university’s impact during her years of service in the Registrar’s Office and Academic Success.
“Like so many before me, FHU has been a mission field,” Kimpel said. “Campus is a small version of the first century church. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn skills to effectively communicate with different cultures, grow in faith and scholarship.”
She said witnessing students grow throughout their college experience has been one of the greatest blessings of her career.
“Witnessing the transition from an uncertain freshman to a confident graduate has been a privilege,” Kimpel said. “My time at FHU has been a blessing. I hope my efforts have lasting impact for the Lord’s Church.”
Dr. Paul Fader served as Bearer of the University Mace during FHU's spring graduation ceremony.
Susan Kimpel will retire as director of Academic Success and Records on July 31.
